The Project:
The 125 Years in 125 Days project is a joint enterprise between The Aspen Times and the Aspen Historical Society to preserve an exact copy of every page of every newspaper published in Aspen from 1881 through 1925 headlines, stories, ads, cartoons, editorials, everything just as it all originally appearedand post them online and available to everyone by January 1, 2007.
The Process:
In order to complete this project a number of steps are involved. First, each page must be photographed individually and put onto microfilm. While this step has already been accomplished with many of the papers, the ones that still need to be done must first also be unbound from their archived bindings before photographing, a delicate process on century-old newsprint. Once on microfilm, each page must then be scanned to convert it into digital form and indexed for ease of finding specific information. Both of these processesthe photographing and the digitizing are done by outside companies and require months to accomplish.
The Fundraising Details:
It has been calculated that a sum of $125,000 will be necessary to successfully complete the 125 Years in 125 Days project. Donations can be made to help reach this goal at three different levels:
