125 Years in 125 Days
—a special fund raising project—
· Imagine the irony of being present when the largest silver nugget ever found was brought down from the Smuggler Mine in 1894—after the silver market had collapsed.
· Be there when the first automobile, a Buick, pulled into Aspen for the first time in 1906.
· Follow the day-to-day excitement that was generated by the draining and reopening of the Smuggler Mine by deep-sea divers in 1910.

The Project:
The 125 Years in 125 Days project is a joint enterprise between The Aspen Times and the Aspen Historical Society to preserve an exact copy of every page of every newspaper published in Aspen from 1881 through 1925— headlines, stories, ads, cartoons, editorials, everything just as it all originally appeared—and post them online and available to everyone by January 1, 2007.

The Process:
In order to complete this project a number of steps are involved. First, each page must be photographed individually and put onto microfilm. While this step has already been accomplished with many of the papers, the ones that still need to be done must first also be unbound from their archived bindings before photographing, a delicate process on century-old newsprint. Once on microfilm, each page must then be scanned to convert it into digital form and indexed for ease of finding specific information. Both of these processes—the photographing and the digitizing— are done by outside companies and require months to accomplish.

The Fundraising Details:
It has been calculated that a sum of $125,000 will be necessary to successfully complete the 125 Years in 125 Days project. Donations can be made to help reach this goal at three different levels:

$125
will preserve a week’s worth of news
$450
will cover a month
$5000
will save a year’s worth of papers for everyone to enjoy
