A casual inquiry netted over 350 names of "Aspen characters". The number of replies astounded us. Now, several months later, it is clear that this is only the beginning. Every day someone says, "but what about…?" So we know this is just a beginning. We’ll keep going as long as the characters keep coming! This isn’t a contest. There can’t be a winner – a “best character” award—we are all the winners.

We hope you will join in the fun and enjoy the journey with us. Eventually we will add all of the anecdotes to this website. For now, you can look for five new characters every Sunday in the Aspen Times Weekly in print or on-line. And we are installing an exhibit at the Wheeler/Stallard Museum where you can watch the collection grow and grow.

Project Character(s)

The Aspen Historical Society has launched a new project and we not only invite but also encourage anyone with stories in their memory to join in. If you have an anecdote or two about anyone on this list, please share it with us using our mail/fax form. There are many names on this list for whom we cannot furnish stories. That is where you come in—help us complete the list and see your handiwork in print.

We know this list is incomplete. It is based on a random query to random people without forethought or use of scientific technique so please don’t be upset if someone is missing or if you are mystified by someone else’s choice. One person’s character is another person’s geek. This we know to be true. We will retire this list when everyone on it has a story about them in the archives. Then we’ll launch List Two.
