| Then & Now, 1870-2000 The Jackson/Fielder Photos |
BackgroundThe landscape of Coloradothat rich blend of natural beauty, historical places, and contemporary lifetells a captivating story of past, present, and future. More than a century ago, pioneer photographer William Henry Jackson ventured across Colorado searching for views of the best our state could offer, recording for posterity scenes of nearly untouched wilderness, prosperous cities, and economic growth based on mining, railroads, and town building. Today, Jackson's photographs are powerful tokens of Colorado's birth and early development. In 1998, photographer John Fielder set out to discover places where Jackson put his camera tripod over one hundred years ago He hiked 500 miles and drove more than 25,000 miles across the state to stand in Jackson's footsteps and update Jackson's views. Seen together, the Jackson/ Fielder photographs show dramatic changes throughout the stateand sometimes almost no change at all. Like an ongoing visual biography, they tell us what Colorado has been, what it is today, and what it is in the process of becoming. |
