| Henry Gillespie gave this 2,300 lb. silver bell to the city in 1886 as a token of his appreciation for a town that had been very good to him. Imported from Troy, New York, the bell was brought to Aspen over the mountains by mule train. It hung in the tower of the Fire Station on Durant Street, and reportedly could be heard for five miles. It was later moved to a gazebo built by the WPA, which now sits in Paepcke Park (see #6). |
