| Pharmacist Walt Matthew opened Matthew Drug on December 8, 1949. Carl and Katie Bergman bought it in 1965, and renamed it Carl’s Pharmacy. A soda fountain was located inside the front door, and a luncheonette, known as The Sportsman’s Lounge, was situated on the west side. The Bergman’s remodeled and later, in 1967, added an upstairs shopping area and fishpond. The sign outside was removed due to a new town ordinance outlawing neon, and the once popular soda fountain was removed in 1976 due to a lack of employees in the valley. In 1999, Carl’s had 40 employees and four full-time pharmacists.
