The Pitkin County Court House
The Pitkin County Courthouse was completed and dedicated in 1891 in spite of controversy and accusations of political impropriety. Ignoring the public outcry, the commissioners had proceeded with their plans, and Denver architect William Quayle had drawn up plans for a design. The building was dedicated in February of that year. Adorning the main entrance is a silver statue of justice. Note that she is not blindfolded. Perhaps the designers felt it was important for her to keep her eyes on the goings-on about town! Much of the original fine oak details remain, and an authentic atmosphere has been retained through recent repairs and renovations.
