Built by Aspens Mayor Henry Webber, and designed by Pitkin County Courthouse architect William Quayle, this massive, three-story structure was considered the most important building erected in 1891. It took almost a year and $40,000 to complete. Today, it remains one of Aspens most valued historic landmarks with its pressed brick and Peachblow sandstone walls and marvelous dome and cornice that crown the building. The Elks Club bought it for back taxes in 1912 and has continued to meet there ever since. The Post Office was located in the corner from 1924 to 1959. Tom’s Market made its home there until 1986, and the space subsequently became home to a series of retail businesses.

The Elks Building, c. 1965, was home to Tom's Market which was a favorite meeting place for locals, second only to the post office. The building was a central location for the Aspen Community as the postcard (below right) implies.
