Originally Mr. Pools candy store, in the late 1930s this building served as an assay office. By the late 1940s, Elli Iselin, wife of Fred Iselin (co-director of Aspen Ski School) had opened a popular clothing store in the building which she operated for four decades. The building sports a coat of Bayer blue paint, Herbert Bayer’s favorite color.

^ In 1949, during the Goethe Bicentennial, the LaFave Building was used as the headquarters for the conference. |
< When the Bicentennial was over, Elli Iselin moved in. Her shop, which carried the latest in ski fashion and equipment, remained a must stop on shopping routes for over forty years. This photo was taken outside Elli's, c. 1955, when Maria Bogner introduced her "stretch pant" to the skiing world. The model is also holding the latest in skis, the first metal ski introduced by Howard Head. Both of these innovations would change ski fashion and equipment forever. |
