The Mother Lode

The Mother Lode is one of the few remaining false fronted buildings in Aspen. False fronts were common to early mining camps, giving buildings, and often tents, more height and a more substantial, finished look intended to impress eastern investors.

< The Mother Lode building does not appear in photographs around 1900. It's not until photos like this from the 1940s, that the familiar building appears as a store for hay, grain and coal. While this indicates that it is not an original Victorian mining era building, it is nevertheless an excellent example of false-fronted architecture.
