The Mother Lode is one of the few remaining false fronted buildings in Aspen. False fronts were common to early mining camps, giving buildings, and often tents, more height and a more substantial, finished look intended to impress eastern investors.

< The Mother Lode building does not appear in photographs around 1900. It's not until photos like this from the 1940s, that the familiar building appears as a store for hay, grain and coal. While this indicates that it is not an original Victorian mining era building, it is nevertheless an excellent example of false-fronted architecture. |
