This block was a substantial residential block until after the turn of the century. It was used as a dump until it was landscaped in the 1940s by The Aspen Women’s Civic Improvement League and became known as City Park. The park’s name was changed to Paepcke Park in the 1960s in honor of Walter Paepcke who was instrumental in Aspen’s cultural rebirth. The Gazebo in the center of the park was built as a W.P.A. project and originally stood on Hopkins Ave. where the Aspen Fire Station is now. It was moved to the park in 1961 and reconstructed in 1996.
